Designing Your Own Retail Outlet
Feb 2nd, 2010
Whatever it is, you have made the decision to start this business. You have the empty shop just screaming to be decorated. You have all these ideas pouring in and out of your head but there is just one problem. You can't seem to get the ideas sorted out. Is this the right time to call in the interior designer and let the professional deal with it, even if it means taking out more loan?
Hang on a minute...that doesn't have to be the case.
You see, as mind-boggling as designing your own retail outlet may sound to you, it is possible. All you need is the following:-
A general idea
Some time to surf around the internet for the above-said inspiration
Time to find the stuff to fit into your shop
Brainstorming sessions with your friends, family or spouse about how best to project the best image that you can come up with without the help of an interior designer.
As you may already be aware of, hiring an interior designer does NOT come cheap. The upside to hiring an interior designer to do the job is that you have the hands-off mentality. The downside to hiring an interior designer is that in the end, it might turn out to be completely different from what you had in mind.
Interior designers were sent to special schools to learn about concepts and they have good information and experience in how to make use of the available space. But what they do not have is your preferences.
Some really good interior designers may do a good job but that is the risk you are going to have to take.
The worse thing about designing your own retail outlet is that you need an incredible amount of time to get it right. There is no rushing things and buying the first thing that hits your fancy. You need mental clarity to remember each furniture, each rack, each shelve and each glass panel. And then in your mind, you ought to be able to see it all fit together in your shop.
Never rush the creative process. What we can also do is to consult with an interior designer (paying consultation fees) without actually using his or her services. This way, you get the expertise without having to pay an arm and a leg for their full service.
